Pushing work into the background is one of the most common and critical architectural patterns for building responsive, scalable .NET applications, but it’s full of subtle complexities that are easy to get wrong. This course provides a comprehensive guide to building robust background processing systems, starting from first principles. We’ll begin by establishing why you need to move work off the request thread in the first place, exploring the trade-offs between In-Process vs Out of Process Background Work. You’ll first master the built-in .NET primitives, going deep on the Hosted Service Lifecycle, the differences between Background Service vs IHostedService, and the practical necessities of working with Scoped Dependencies and implementing Graceful Shutdown and Cancellation. From there, we’ll move work completely out of the API into a dedicated Worker Service, covering its hosting, configuration, and design.
With the foundational hosting models established, we’ll build real-world features, starting with a Simple Job Queue and then implementing Time-Based Workloads using popular libraries like Hangfire and Quartz. The second half of the course is all about production-readiness and scale. You’ll learn how to design Idempotent Background Jobs, implement strategies for Retries and Exponential Backoff, and reliably handle Poison Jobs and Job State Transitions. We’ll cover the essential observability patterns for these systems, including Logging, Monitoring Background Workloads, and Health Checks for Workers. Finally, you’ll tackle the challenges of distributed systems, from managing Concurrency Control between multiple workers to integrating with industrial-strength message brokers like RabbitMQ and Apache Kafka to build a truly resilient and scalable architecture.
